You'll Never Believe This But Turns Out Brian Dumoulin Is Hockey Tough

You see that photo right there? They say the Stanley Cup weighs 35 lbs except for when you’re the one holding it. But even still, it’s not feather. Why am I telling you this? Well because Pittsburgh Penguins’ Brian Dumoulin is holding this cup above his head with a broken hand. A hand which he broke and then re-broke throughout the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Pittsburgh Post-GazetteAfter taking a David Savard slapshot off the hand with about eight minutes to go in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against Columbus, Dumoulin’s right hand was damaged.

Severely. Repeatedly. Irreparably. At least for the time being…“It would get better for a little bit,” Dumoulin said. “I’d do a cross-check then it would break again. It was a process.”…

…“It was tough to play with it, but obviously everybody had injuries,” Dumoulin said. “It’s all healed up now. They were deciding on surgery or not at the end of the season, but doctors saw a little bit of healing. We gave it about three weeks, and I kind of have been testing it out the last week. I’ve skated, and there have been no problems. I’m happy about it.”

So let’s get this straight. Brian Dumoulin got his hand broken by a slapshot in the 1st round of the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He then went on to play in all 25 playoff games for the Penguins. Dude even logged 26 minutes in game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. 26 minutes in the biggest game of the season with a mangled up hand that kept breaking and re-breaking. Meanwhile, you’ll have NBA players sit out for the entire season if they jam their wittle finger on the ball.

But that’s just what hockey guys do. A broken hand is a helluva long way from the heart. And just like Dumo said, “obviously everybody had injuries”. If you’re playing in the Stanley Cup Final at 100% health, that means you must have been doing something wrong the whole season leading up to the Final. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Dumoulin tried to block that shot with his hand against Columbus just because he knew it would give him that Hockey Tough advantage he’d need down the stretch. What a sicko.

P.S. – Congrats on the new contract, guy. 6 years, $4.1 million AAV. Not exactly what I’d say is worth having to live in Pittsburgh for the next 6 years but it’s not too bad. Just don’t be surprised if Pres tries to take 50% of that from you since you’re a recurring guest on PMT.
